PARASHAT LECH LECHA — לֶךְ־לְךָ

The Divine Journey of Avraham: From the Supernal Worlds of Atzilut, Beriah and Yetzirah into Assiyah — The Holy Land of Eretz Yisrael

An exploration through Torah, Midrash, Kabbalah, Zohar and Chassidut.

1. The Divine Command — Bereishit 12:1

Translation: “And HaShem said to Abram: Go forth from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you.”

The Divine command to Avraham Avinu is much more than an instruction to relocate from Mesopotamia to Canaan.

At the literal level, it begins the covenantal journey toward Eretz Yisrael. At the spiritual level, it can be understood as the movement from inherited identity toward Divine purpose.

The essential question becomes:

Why would HaShem direct a soul rooted in supernal holiness toward the lowest world of physical action, rather than command it to ascend and remain within the higher spiritual worlds?

Chassidut offers a remarkable answer: the Divine purpose is not fulfilled merely by possessing spiritual light, but by bringing that light into the physical world and transforming life through Torah, mitzvot, justice and holiness.

This reading is a Kabbalistic application of Bereishit 12:1, not a claim that the biblical verse explicitly describes Avraham physically departing from Atzilut, Beriah and Yetzirah.

2. The Four Worlds — The descent of Divine revelation

THE FOUR WORLDS — סדר השתלשלות העולמות

01 · DIVINE EMANATION

אֲצִילוּת · ATZILUT

Divine unity and emanation

02 · CREATION

בְּרִיאָה · BERIAH

Emergence of distinct spiritual existence

03 · FORMATION

יְצִירָה · YETZIRAH

Spiritual formation, emotions and angelic service

04 · ACTION

עֲשִׂיָּה · ASSIYAH

Physical existence, mitzvot and sacred action

Eretz Yisrael is a physical land within Assiyah, endowed with special covenantal holiness — not identical with the entirety of Assiyah.

The Kabbalistic Four Worlds describe degrees of Divine manifestation and concealment rather than four ordinary geographical places.

Atzilut — אֲצִילוּת: The World of Divine Unity

Atzilut is associated with Divine emanation, where the sefirot are understood in profound unity with their Divine source.

In a symbolic reading of Lech Lecha, Atzilut represents the original unity toward which the soul is oriented.

Avraham's faith in the One Creator expresses this principle of unity, but his mission requires that faith to become visible in the world.

Beriah — בְּרִיאָה: The World of Creation

Beriah represents the emergence of created spiritual existence. It is often associated with higher understanding and the Throne of Glory.

For Avraham, this corresponds symbolically to the recognition of HaShem as Creator and Master of the universe.

Yet recognizing the Creator is not the completion of his mission.

Yetzirah — יְצִירָה: The World of Formation

Yetzirah is particularly associated with angelic service, spiritual formation and the emotional dimensions of service.

Avraham is traditionally associated with Chesed — lovingkindness.

His love of HaShem must therefore become kindness toward human beings, hospitality, moral courage and covenantal obedience.

Assiyah — עֲשִׂיָּה: The World of Action

Assiyah encompasses the realm of action, including our material world.

Here spiritual intention encounters ordinary realities: land, livelihood, relationships, material needs, ethical decisions and obedience to commandments.

The deepest meaning of this descent is that holiness is not merely contemplated in higher worlds. It must be enacted in the lower world.

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi explains in Tanya, chapter 36, that the purpose of the unfolding of the worlds is realized in the lowest realm, where concealment is transformed into Divine revelation.

3. Lech Lecha — Go toward your true self

The Hebrew expression is striking:

לֶךְ־לְךָ — Lech Lecha

It can be expounded homiletically as “Go to yourself,” indicating a journey toward one's deeper purpose.

The Kli Yakar on Bereishit 12:1 explains that Avraham is led away from three kinds of external attachment toward a fourth, more essential destination. He connects the expression Lech Lecha with one's true essence and with the sanctity of Mount Moriah, where he discusses the correspondence between the earthly and heavenly Temple.

This gives us a profound paradox:

Avraham goes outward geographically, but inward spiritually.

He leaves a familiar external world to discover the purpose of his soul.

The Chabad tradition likewise explains that the soul's deeper essence can become revealed precisely through its entry into material life and its fulfillment of Divine purpose.

The movement is therefore not simply:

Higher world → Lower world.

It is:

Divine source → Spiritual realization → Sacred action → Revelation of Divine purpose.

4. The Zohar's hidden interpretation: Avraham's journey is the descent of the soul

The Zohar interprets Lech Lecha not only as Avraham's historical journey, but also as the soul's descent from the heavenly realms into physical existence.

In Zohar I, 77b–78b, the soul's heavenly origin, its descent into the body and the meaning of the three departures are discussed. One interpretation associates the land with the lower Garden of Eden, the father's house with the higher Garden of Eden, and the destination with the material world.

This is particularly relevant because it establishes a genuine Zoharic foundation for reading Bereishit 12:1 as a descent from higher spiritual existence into earthly life.

Three departures, one destination

We can organize this mystical interpretation into three spiritual movements.

First: From your land — מֵאַרְצְךָ

The soul departs from the spiritual environment in which it previously dwelt.

It moves from a state of greater spiritual awareness toward existence in which the Divine presence is more concealed.

Second: From your birthplace — וּמִמּוֹלַדְתְּךָ

Symbolically, the soul enters conditions beyond its original spiritual environment. Its capacities must now be expressed through a body, human relationships and earthly circumstances.

Third: From your father's house — וּמִבֵּית אָבִיךָ

The heavenly source of the soul is evoked. The soul must fulfill a mission beyond the immediate experience of heavenly closeness.

Finally: To the land I will show you — אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַרְאֶךָּ

The soul enters the world of action.

The Zohar's interpretation refers broadly to earthly existence. Avraham's own historical destination, however, is specifically the Land of Canaan, which becomes Eretz Yisrael in the covenantal story.

These two meanings should be held together without confusing them.

5. Why does the soul descend from Atzilut, Beriah and Yetzirah into Assiyah?

נִתְאַוָּה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לִהְיוֹת לוֹ דִּירָה בַּתַּחְתּוֹנִים

Nit'avah HaKadosh Baruch Hu lihyot lo dirah batachtonim.

The Holy One, blessed be He, desired a dwelling in the lower realms.

Midrash Tanchuma, Nasso 16; developed in Tanya, chapter 36

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi explains that the ultimate purpose of the progressive unfolding of the spiritual worlds is not the higher worlds themselves, but the transformation of the lowest realm.

Divine light becomes concealed through successive stages of existence so that human beings can reveal holiness where it is not immediately apparent.

Consider the connection to Avraham:

In Atzilut, Divine unity is the defining reality.

In Beriah, the created being can apprehend the Divine source.

In Yetzirah, love, awe and spiritual devotion receive expression.

But in Assiyah, a person can make a physical home hospitable, feed a hungry traveler, establish an altar, practice righteousness and live the covenant in the land.

Thus Avraham's descent into the physical geography of Eretz Yisrael can be understood as a movement toward the realization of Divine purpose, not away from holiness.

The soul comes down in order to elevate the world.

6. Why specifically Eretz Yisrael?

It is important to distinguish between Assiyah as the entire realm of action and Eretz Yisrael as a particular sacred place within that realm.

The Torah describes Eretz Yisrael as a land under special Divine providence:

דְּבָרִים י״א:י״ב — Devarim 11:12

A land that HaShem your God cares for; the eyes of HaShem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

This gives the physical land a distinctive covenantal dimension.

In a Kabbalistic application, we can describe the relationship as follows:

Dimension

Spiritual significance

Atzilut

The source of revealed Divine unity

Beriah

Consciousness of the Creator

Yetzirah

Formation of love, awe and devotion

Assiyah

Physical realization through holy action

Eretz Yisrael

The covenantal land where Avraham is commanded to establish his mission

The Land of Israel is not merely a spiritual symbol. It remains the actual land to which HaShem directed Avraham.

Yet the land also carries a spiritual calling: to bring heavenly purpose into earthly existence.

The Kli Yakar: The earthly and heavenly Temple

The Kli Yakar on Genesis 12:1 provides a remarkable connection to this subject.

He relates Avraham's journey toward his essential purpose to Mount Moriah and discusses the correspondence between the lower Temple and the upper Temple, including the image of a ladder through which souls ascend and descend.

This provides a traditional basis for connecting the earthly holy place with higher spiritual realities, without claiming that the Temple or the land is literally a separate world of Atzilut.

7. The Chassidic mystery: Leaving your will, emotions and intellect

A teaching presented by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in a discourse on Lech Lecha, 5738 (1977), develops three inward dimensions of Avraham's departure.

  • Me'artzecha — From your land: Going beyond one's existing ratzon, or personal will and desires.

  • Umimoladetecha — From your birthplace: Transcending the limitations of innate emotional characteristics.

  • Umibeit avicha — From your father's house: Moving beyond habitual intellectual patterns and inherited assumptions.

The Rebbe's point is that even a holy person must not remain confined to their existing spiritual achievements. Divine service requires continued growth.

This allows a second, complementary way of connecting Lech Lecha to the Four Worlds:

Torah command

Inner Chassidic work

Four Worlds application

From your land

Purify the will

Directing the will toward Divine unity

From your birthplace

Refine emotional character

Transforming the qualities associated with Yetzirah

From your father's house

Go beyond inherited understanding

Moving beyond the limits of created intellect

To the land I will show you

Fulfill the Divine calling

Manifesting holiness in Assiyah

8. Avraham and the mystery of two movements: descent and ascent

There are two simultaneous directions in Lech Lecha.

Descent

Hamshachah — הַמְשָׁכָה

Drawing spiritual influence into material existence.

Atzilut → Beriah → Yetzirah → Assiyah

Ascent

Ha'ala'ah — הַעֲלָאָה

Elevating earthly life through holy action and devotion.

Assiyah → Yetzirah → Beriah → Atzilut

These are Kabbalistic concepts that illuminate the story rather than a literal travel itinerary for Avraham's soul.

Through his journey, Avraham brings knowledge of the One God into the physical world. Through his faith, obedience, hospitality and kindness, earthly life becomes a vehicle of holiness.

The Midrash in Bereishit Rabbah 39:1 tells of Avraham perceiving a palace and asking whether it could be without a master. HaShem reveals Himself as the Master of the world. Avraham's recognition must now become a public mission.

This is the significance of the movement from spiritual recognition to concrete responsibility.

9. Gaddi Efrayim Notes — The inner meaning of Lech Lecha

The Divine call to Avraham may be understood as the beginning of a great movement of revelation.

Atzilut is the source of unity. Beriah gives expression to created spiritual consciousness. Yetzirah forms the qualities of devotion. Assiyah becomes the place where holiness is lived.

Avraham does not leave the Divine source behind. He carries his covenantal awareness into a world in which Divine holiness must be revealed through action.

The journey to Eretz Yisrael therefore unites three profound dimensions:

The soul has a heavenly orientation.

The body has an earthly mission.

The land becomes the place where the covenant takes physical form.

This also sheds light on the next verse, Bereishit 12:2:

וֶהְיֵה בְּרָכָה — Veheyeh Berakhah — And you shall be a blessing.

Avraham is not commanded merely to receive blessing. He must become a source of blessing to others.

His calling proceeds from his own transformation to the transformation of his surroundings.

He is instructed to leave what defines him externally, enter the place appointed by HaShem, and reveal holiness through the life he builds there.

The ultimate mystery of Lech Lecha is therefore:

One goes forth from familiar existence to discover one's true Divine purpose — and the purpose is fulfilled not by escaping the physical world, but by sanctifying it.
