"Brilliant Light in Bleak Darkness" the 6th Rebbe of Chabad - Rabbi Yosef Yitschak Shneorson

The Frierdiker Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, is a profound example of spiritual resilience and unwavering dedication to Hashem and His Torah, even under the direst circumstances.

His challenges to bring spiritual Torah light into the darkness, uplifting and preserving Judaism - as Rebbe - would be unmatched, in the rich traditional - hundreds of years history - of the Chabad and Chasidic Dynasties - beginning with the Baal Shem Tov, back before the Napolionic wars.

Living through Stalin’s oppressive regime in the USSR and witnessing and escaping the horrors of the Holocaust, the Frierdiker Rebbe faced trials that would shake anyone to their core, and not many survived.

Yet, much like Yosef HaTzadik in Mitzrayim, he rose above his personal suffering to serve a greater purpose — preserving the Jewish people, their faith, and their traditions during one of the darkest chapters in history.

A Beacon of Strength in Times of Darkness

Under the Communist regime, the Rebbe led clandestine efforts to ensure that Judaism survived, despite the severe danger to himself and his followers.

The Frierdiker Rebbe organized underground schools to teach Torah and mitzvot, ensuring that Jewish children could learn Aleph-Bet, keep Shabbat, maintain the sanctity of the mikveh, and uphold other essential practices of Yiddishkeit.

His Hasidim not only safeguarded the traditions of Chabad but extended their efforts to assist Jews across all sectors of fellow chasidim and of the Russian Jewish community at large.

These acts of bravery came at a steep price. Many of the Rebbe's followers were imprisoned, exiled to Siberia, or died while sanctifing Hashem's name. Despite this, the Rebbe’s determination never wavered. He believed that every Jew, no matter how far removed from Torah observance, possessed an inherent holiness and potential for greatness.

A Vision of Joy

One of the Frierdiker Rebbe’s most profound teachings is the idea of simcha (joy) as a central element of Jewish life. In Ma’amorim Kuntreisim, Chelek Aleph, the Rebbe explains that true joy comes from focusing on the good in others.

To live in joy, one must see the strengths and virtues of those around them — "ma'alat chavero ve'lo et chesrono" (the merits of one’s friend and not their shortcomings).

This teaching reflects the Rebbe's own perspective. Even amidst the trauma and tribulations of his life, he consistently saw the good in every Jew.

He believed that by recognizing the positive qualities in others, we not only elevate them but also uplift ourselves. This approach enabled the Frierdiker Rebbe to maintain a sense of joy and purpose, even in the face of unimaginable hardships.

Lessons for Today

From the Frierdiker Rebbe’s life and teachings, we learn the importance of:

1. Forgiveness and Love: Just as Yosef forgave his brothers and focused on the Divine plan behind his suffering, the Frierdiker Rebbe looked beyond the flaws of others and sought their betterment. We, too, should strive to replace resentment with understanding and love.

2. Joy in Service: Joy is not merely an emotion but a spiritual state. When rooted in Torah observance and the recognition of the good in others, joy becomes a transformative force that strengthens our connection to Hashem.

3. Perseverance Through Faith: No matter the challenges, the Frierdiker Rebbe demonstrated that unwavering faith in Hashem and a commitment to Torah can illuminate even the darkest times.

The Joy of Torah

The connection between joy and Torah is underscored in the month of Tishrei, culminating in Zman Simchateinu (the Season of Our Rejoicing) during Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret, where we celebrate the Torah itself.

This teaches us that true joy is not fleeting or superficial; it is deeply intertwined with the fulfillment of mitzvot and our bond with Hashem.

The Frierdiker Rebbe’s life exemplifies this principle. Even in the face of oppression, his joy in serving Hashem and uplifting others never faltered. This joy inspired his Hasidim to persevere and spread light in the darkest times.

By embracing the Rebbe's teachings, we can cultivate joy in our own lives — joy rooted in Torah, in seeing the good in others, and in the unshakable knowledge that Hashem is with us in every step of our journey no matter how Bleak the situation seems.

Let us take this message to heart and live with the spirit of simcha shel mitzvah, seeing the wonder and benifits in our fellow man and uplifting ourselves and those around us in joy.
