Parashat Ki Tisa 5786 - “When You Elevate ”
“Gaddi's Notes on the Eternal Wisdom of the Prominent Sages”:
Ki-Tisa: The Fall of the Calf and the Birth of the Second Tablets
“The People” or “The Sons of Israel”? — The Secret of the Erev Rav in the Writings of the Jewish Sages
1️⃣ The Textual Shift: Am vs. Bnei Yisrael
When theTorahstates:
“And thepeople(הָעָם)saw thatMoses delayed…”(Exodus 32:1)
it doesnot sayBnei Yisrael(theSons of Israel), butha’am—“the people.”
Thesagesweredeeply sensitivetothisshift in terminology.
WhenScripturesays“Bnei Yisrael”,itreferstothecovenantal soul-root of Israel.
When it says merely“ha’am”,itoftenhintsatthepresence or influenceoftheErev Rav(Mixed Multitude).
ThisdistinctionisexplainedintheZohar(II:191a),whichteachesthatthesin of the Golden CalfwasprimarilyinstigatedbytheErev Rav.
2️⃣ Who Were the Erev Rav?
“And thesons of Israeljourneyed… and amixed multitudewent up also with them” (Exodus 12:38)
According to theZoharandMidrash:
They wereEgyptianswhoattached themselvestoIsraelduring theExodus.
Someconvertedin the time ofYosef.
Others joined during theplagues, impressed bydivine power.
But thesagesexplain:Conversion of identity does not always mean rectification of inner essence.
The Zohar states that their external conversion did not uproot their Egyptian consciousness. Their heart remained attached to the culture of Egypt — power, materialism, magic, and hierarchy.
Gaddi Efrayim Notes emphasize:The Erev Rav represent attachment without transformation — proximity to holiness without inner refinement.
3️⃣ The Meaning of “Erev” — Dictionary
“ Erev ” means:
Intermixed
Evening
A blending of light and darkness
As written :
“There was evening (erev ) and there was morning (boker), one day.” (Genesis 1:5)
Evening precedes clarity.
But the sages explain something deeper:
Boker (morning) comes from bikoret — discernment.
Erev is confusion.
Boker is clarification.
The Erev Rav represent a state of spiritual mixture — good and evil intertwined.
The Zohar (I:26a) connects them to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil — a mixture that brings spiritual death when not properly refined.
Gaddi Efrayim Notes explain:The Erev Rav is not merely a historical group — it is a spiritual archetype of inner mixture.
4️⃣ “Rav” — The Secret of Leadership Corruption
“Rav” means:
Many
Great
Leader
The Vilna Gaon ( Likutim haGra ) hints that:
Rav = Rosh Banim ( Head of the sons )
This is a profound warning.
The danger of the Erev Rav is not numerical.
It is positional.
When confusion ascends to leadership, corruption spreads downward.
Thus Lamentations says:
“Her adversaries have become her head.” (Lam 1:5)
And Isaiah declares:
“Your leaders are rebellious…” (Is 1:23)
The Tikkunei Zohar ( Tikkun 21 ) teaches that in every generation , the Erev Rav seeks authority within Israel .
Gaddi Efrayim Notes:The deepest exile is not external oppression — it is internal leadership misalignment.
5️⃣ The Pattern: Instigation and Contagion
Numbers 11:4:
“And the mixed multitude among them lusted a lust; and the sons of Israel also wept…”
Notice the pattern:
Erev Rav initiate desire.
Bnei Yisrael are influenced.
The entire camp destabilizes .
The Zohar explains this as spiritual contagion.
Desire spreads faster than faith.
6️⃣ The Zohar's Five Categories of Erev Rav
The Zohar describes five types of Erev Rav souls:
Those seeking power.
Those craving wealth.
Those desiring honor.
Hypocritical pious types.
False spiritual leaders.
The Arizal explains these are sparks from the shattered vessels (Shevirat HaKelim) that were not yet rectified.
They attach themselves to holiness to draw nourishment from it.
The Five Categories of Erev Rav (Zohar)
The Zohar enumerates five types:
Those who pursue honor
Those who pursue wealth
Those who pursue lust
Hypocritical righteous
Corrupt leaders
Arizal explains :
These correspond to five unrectified aspects of Gevurah fallen into the Klipot.
Their תיקון is through sweetening Dinim in their root.
🔹 Gaddi Ephraim Integration
In Beit Yisrael pedagogy :
Every generation experiences leadership tests.
When Din without Rachamim ascends, confusion spreads.
The rectification is not destruction — but sweetening at the root.
7️⃣ The Cosmic Role of Mixture
But here the sages add a paradox:
Mixture is not accidental.
“There was evening and there was morning.”
Evening is necessary before morning.
Disorder precedes rectification.
The Erev Rav represent:
The stage of mixture before purification.
The test of discernment.
The challenge that produces clarity.
Gaddi Efraim Notes :
Without Erev, there is no Boker. Without confusion, no refined faith emerges.
8️⃣ The Inner Erev Rav — Psychological Dimension
The Baal Shem Tov and Chassidic masters internalize this teaching:
Erev Rav is also within the soul.
The part that serves God for ego.
The part that seeks honor in holiness.
The part that desires spirituality without self-nullification.
Thus “the people” vs “the sons of Israel” also describes:
The outer self
The covenantal inner self
The battle is internal before it is national.
9️⃣ The Messianic Rectification
The Zohar and Arizal teach that before redemption:
The Erev Rav rise to prominence.
Confusion intensifies.
Leadership becomes inverted.
But this is the final Erev before the ultimate Boker.
Zechariah 14:7 — “At evening time there shall be light.”
Gaddi Efrayim Notes connect this to Mashiach: The final redemption emerges from the clarification of mixture. The true leaders are revealed when false leadership collapses.
🔟 Final Synthesis
Why does the Torah sometimes say “the people” and sometimes “the sons of Israel”?
Identifying spiritual composition
Teaching about influence
Warning about mixture
Revealing the anatomy of exile
The Erev Rav are:
Historical Egyptians
Mystical soul-roots of mixture
Archetypes of corrupted leadership
Internal aspects of ego
A necessary stage before redemption
And the message is not accusation — but discernment.
From Erev comes Boker. From mixture comes clarity. From exile comes redemption.
